PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF:
Our Alexandra Road project is an example of visionary design and ambition. Originally a 12-bedroom boarding house that later served as a pathology lab, this home has been reimagined into an architectural masterpiece that elegantly blends pre-war Queenslander charm with modern subtropical living.
The design integrates seamless indoor-outdoor living, capitalising on its inner-city location. Screened façades, a key design feature, evoke the traditional veranda patterns of pre-war homes while offering modern solar shading and privacy. Strategically placed skylights flood the home with natural light, casting an interplay of light and shadow throughout the space.
A balanced palette of lightweight black and white materials contrasted with a tyrolene rendered base firmly grounds the house, creating a harmonious connection with the surrounding landscaped garden. The result is a home that honours its heritage while offering progressive contemporary living.
CHALLENGES & ACHIEVEMENTS:
One of the most significant challenges was the complex process of raising and relocating the original pre-war home, a highly dilapidated 12-bedroom boarding house. Extensive structural work was required, and the project’s large scale demanded meticulous attention to detail.
Achieving the high-level finishes throughout the home, from the sleek modern interiors to the carefully crafted external screening, required exceptional craftsmanship. The successful completion of the project represents a perfect blend of old and new, creating a bold yet respectful homage to the property’s historic roots.
