PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF:

Valhalla, a stunning contemporary extension and alteration to a pre-war Queenslander, redefines the traditional character of Ascot’s architecture while honouring its heritage. This project masterfully reimagines the classic ‘filigree’ battening and trellis screens through a modern lens, creating a floating pavilion that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor living spaces.

The home’s centrepiece is a newly designed entry and central stair spine, linking the old and new while drawing natural light and air into the traditionally darker areas of the house. A striking mix of white stained timber, board-form concrete soffits, and warm oak detailing blends the original home’s charm with the new extension’s sleek, modern aesthetic.

CHALLENGES & ACHIEVEMENTS:

Valhalla presented a complex set of challenges, particularly the meticulous timber detailing required to preserve the integrity of the pre-war structure. Significant engineering efforts were necessary to support and elevate the original house while integrating it into the new design. Extensive board-form and off-form concrete detailing and internal oak linings demanded a high level of craftsmanship and precision to achieve the flawless finishes seen throughout the home.

This renovation and extension successfully blend heritage charm with contemporary luxury, creating a one-of-a-kind family home that exemplifies sophisticated, subtropical living in the heart of Ascot.
